Intro to the

Yoga for Better Balance Series

Moving towards tree pose.

During this 75-minute practice, we explore somatic movement, conscious breathwork, and intentional yoga postures designed to support balance, stability, and ease. While we won’t practice Tree Pose itself, the class is thoughtfully crafted to cultivate the flexibility, strength, and neuromuscular awareness that make balancing postures feel more accessible and sustainable.

We’ll use a chair and a block to support the practice. If you don’t have a block, a roll of paper towels or any similarly sized household item works beautifully. These props aren’t shortcuts, they’re tools for listening more deeply to the body.

Throughout the practice, I invite you to move with curiosity and self-trust. If something doesn’t feel right in your body, pause. Check in. Ask yourself what you need in that moment, and allow your body to lead. There is no achievement here, only presence. One of the gifts of a video practice is the freedom it offers: the space to explore at your own pace, to rest when needed, and to choose what’s right for you without being seen or judged.

We begin on the ground with somatic movements, gentle, mindful patterns that help the brain and body communicate more clearly, creating greater ease and efficiency in movement. From there, we transition to seated work using the chair, followed by a few standing postures. The class weaves between floor, chair, and standing shapes a few times, allowing the body to integrate and rest between efforts.

If being on the floor isn’t accessible or comfortable for you, many of these movements can also be done on a bed. My hope is that this practice meets you exactly where you are and supports you in feeling more steady, connected, and at home in your body.

Chair Yoga near Chestnut Hill PA 19118

Yoga is often imagined as stretching on a mat or performing complex poses, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Our intention is to offer yoga practices for flexibility, strength, balance, and peace in a way that is fully accessible. Chair Yoga is something everyone can enjoy and benefit while also helpful for recovering from surgery, managing joint replacements, or for those simply want a safer, more supported practice, chair yoga meets your body exactly where it is.

In a private session, you’ll move mindfully through postures adapted to a chair and other supportive props. Each movement is intentional, designed to open joints, strengthen muscles, improve circulation, and cultivate a sense of calm. Breathwork and gentle stretches are incorporated to ease tension, awaken energy, and leave you feeling more at home in your body.

These sessions are personalized for you. You’ll never be asked to push beyond your comfort or ability. Every pose and sequence is tailored to your body’s current needs, making yoga an empowering, supportive, and restorative practice. Many clients find that even a few weeks of private chair yoga improves mobility, reduces stiffness, and gives a newfound sense of confidence in daily movement.

At Merritt Massage and Yoga, our Private Chair Yoga sessions are designed for anyone who wants the benefits of yoga: strength, balance, flexibility, and calm, with the support of a chair and additional props.

This is ideal if you’ve had surgery, joint replacements, or prefer supported movement. You have the option to add-on recording your sessions. After your in-person session you will receive a video to reinforce the class and help you stay consistent with your home chair yoga practice.

Common Questions about One-on-One Chair Yoga Sessions

What to expect during a private chair yoga session?

Private Yoga Sessions including chair yoga are gentle, guided practices designed to meet you exactly where you are. Each 60-minute session blends mindful movement, gentle stretches, breath work, and guided alignment exercises. All adapted to a chair or supportive props. You do not need to be flexible to benefit. The practice is safe, comfortable, and intentional, helping you build strength, improve mobility, and release tension without strain. Every movement is tailored to your body’s current abilities, so you can feel confident and supported as you explore new ranges of motion and gentle strengthening exercises.  You do not need to bring anything, we bring everything we need for your yoga session.

Is Chair Yoga Painful?

No. Chair Yoga is designed to be completely safe and non-painful. While some movements may feel like a deep stretch or gentle strengthening—similar to the sensation after a mild workout—the focus is always on comfort, alignment, and mindful engagement. We do not believe that “pain equals gain.” Effective chair yoga is about releasing tension, improving joint mobility, and building strength in a way that feels restorative, supportive, and empowering.

How is chair yoga different from traditional floor yoga?

Traditional yoga often involves poses on the floor, requiring balance, flexibility, and getting up and down from the mat. Chair Yoga adapts these same principles to a seated or supported practice, making it accessible for anyone with mobility limitations, post-surgery recovery, or joint replacements. While traditional yoga can feel expansive and dynamic, chair yoga is intentionally safe, stable, and fully personalized. Movements, stretches, and strength exercises are guided from a chair or prop, allowing the body to open, strengthen, and restore without risk of strain or discomfort. The intention is the same as traditional yoga: to help you feel more confident, mobile, and at ease in your body.

Who benefits from private chair yoga?

Private Chair Yoga is ideal for individuals recovering from surgery, managing joint replacements, experiencing chronic pain, or needing a gentle, supported practice. It is also perfect for anyone who prefers one-on-one guidance to build strength, improve flexibility, and practice mindfulness in a safe environment. Each session is fully customized to your goals, needs, and current mobility, so you receive the maximum benefit in a way that respects your body.

Can I practice at home using recordings?

Yes! Each private session can be recorded so you can revisit your personalized class anytime at home. These recordings reinforce what you learn in your sessions, help maintain consistency, and allow you to safely continue your practice at your own pace. Having your own guided session at home provides an added layer of support, ensuring you can move confidently even outside your private session.

Will I be in the recorded class?

Recordings are focused entirely on the teacher and the instruction, so you will not appear on video. If you prefer, we can keep any conversation before or after class off the recording. You can also request to pause or turn off the recording at any time during the session. Your practice is yours first and foremost, and the recording exists only to help you revisit and continue your personalized session safely at home. You can move, breathe, and follow along completely at ease, knowing the focus is on your guidance and your body, not on being filmed.
