Thai Yoga Massage has all the benefits of a deep tissue massage and stretching combined. As you relax and breath the body is passively stretched and massaged into a blissful state.

Thai Massage in Chestnut Hill PA 19118

Experience a flowing sequence of assisted stretches and mindful pressure that opens joints, softens tension, and invites deep relaxation. Performed fully clothed, this practice nourishes both body and energy, leaving you grounded, spacious, and renewed.

Thai massage is an ancient healing art that blends assisted stretching, yoga-like movement, and rhythmic acupressure to create a deeply restorative and energizing bodywork experience. Unlike typical oil-based massages, Thai massage is performed fully clothed on a mat, with the practitioner guiding your body into gentle poses and applying purposeful pressure along the body’s energetic lines (called Sen), helping restore flow, flexibility, and balance throughout your body.

Many people describe it as “lazy yoga” or movement therapy that feels both relaxing and invigorating—you leave not just looser in muscle and joints but with improved circulation, reduced stress, and a sense of ease from head to toe.

What makes it especially appealing is that it combines physical relief with holistic well-being: Thai massage may increase range of motion, ease chronic tension and pain, calm the nervous system, and leave you feeling both peaceful and rejuvenated.

Common Questions about Thai Massage

Energy, Prana, Lifeforce and Chi are all different ways to talk about your energy body.  There are not different life forces, it's all life force, just different paths for understanding and working with the energy body.

What to expect during a session?

Thai Massage includes elements from massage, yoga, acupressure, breath work.  You don't have to be flexible, wherever your starting point it helps you be more flexible.  Thai massage isn't painful if it's applied in a sensitive way.  We don't believe in pain equals gain... and practice effective bodywork.

Is Thai Massage Painful?

In Thai Massage the stretching or massage pressure is consistently firm but within comfortable limits.  We do not believe pain is a goal. Because Thai massage uses stretches, compression, and work into deeper tissues, many people describe sensations as intense, or deep, similar to the feeling after a good workout.

What is the difference between table and traditional thai massage?

Traditional Thai Massage is offered on a floor mat, where the body can move freely through expansive, yoga-like stretches guided by the practitioner’s hands, knees, and gentle body weight, while Table Thai adapts those same techniques to the support of a massage table. Floor Thai tends to feel dynamic and spacious, like assisted movement meditation, inviting deep opening in the hips, spine, and joints, while Table Thai is ideal for those who prefer extra support, have mobility considerations, or want Thai techniques blended with therapeutic massage. Both styles are received fully clothed and work with rhythmic compression and stretching to release tension, improve circulation, and calm the nervous system. The difference is simply how the body is held and guided. Whether on the mat or the table, the intention is the same: to help you feel longer, lighter, and more at home in your body.nners and spiritual seekers alike.

Do I have to be flexible?

No, you do not have to be flexible to receive a Thai massage. Thai massage is designed to meet your body exactly where it is, whether that means you’re supple, stiff, or somewhere in between. Skilled practitioners gently guide your body through stretches and movements that are tailored to your present range of motion, adjusting everything to your comfort and needs rather than forcing your body into shapes ahead of its time. In fact, one of the reasons people seek Thai massage is because it helps improve flexibility and range of motion over time, especially in areas that feel tight or “stuck” from everyday life or prolonged sitting. The work is intentional and supportive, moving you slowly and safely toward greater ease in your body without requiring advanced flexibility to begin.

Myths about Thai Massage

It has to hurt to help. Not True.

One of the most common misconceptions about Thai massage is that it has to hurt. While this work does include gentle stretches and mindful pressure, it’s never meant to be painful. At Merritt Massage & Yoga, we adjust everything to your body’s comfort and readiness. Thai massage is about creating space, releasing tension, and restoring flow—not enduring pain. It’s deeply relaxing, supports flexibility, and invites ease into your muscles and joints.

You have to be flexible. All Levels Welcome

Another myth I hear often is that you need to be bendy to enjoy Thai massage. That’s simply not true. Thai massage meets your body exactly where it is. Whether you’re an experienced yogi or someone who hasn’t stretched in years, the techniques are adapted to your unique range of motion. Flexibility is the result, not the requirement, every body benefits.

Thai Massage is Stretching.

Some people think Thai massage is “just fancy stretching,” but it’s much more than that. This work blends assisted stretches with acupressure, energy line work, and gentle rhythmic movement to create a deeply restorative and balanced experience. At Merritt Massage & Yoga, we honor the tradition while tailoring each session to your body’s needs, leaving you feeling lighter, freer, and truly nurtured.
